Learning Outcomes/Competencies:
At the completion of Water Efficiency for Building Operators, a participant will:

  • effectively communicate to management the benefits of using water efficiently.
  • list the steps involved in analyzing facility water consumption and costs.
  • identify the common water uses in commercial and institutional facilities.
  • describe a full range of strategies for improving the efficiency of facility water use.
  • identify water efficiency opportunities by conducting a building walk-through.
  • list various water efficiency strategies for landscaping and irrigation.
  • know where and how to access the available resources for water efficiency management.

Texts:  STUDENT HANDBOOK: BOC 212 – Water Efficiency for Building Operators, list of resources including web sites.

Teaching Props/Special Equipment: Flush valves, range of aerators and water-saving showerheads, diaphragm for flushometer toilet, pressure tanks, handheld conductivity meter, landscape irrigation water audit catch cans, soil coring devices, pressure gauge, and dye tablets for toilet leaks.

Evaluation:

  • Group Exercise: Walk-through of building to identify water-using equipment and collect water consumption data (likely occurring at the end of the day, but may vary due to site limitations)
  • Group Exercise: Analysis of the collected water consumption data (occurring after the walk through audit)
  • Discussion: Addressing specific issues in students’ buildings (will also occur naturally throughout the training to bring students into discussion of the full range of issues)
