Part 2

HVAC Fundamentals

Prerequisite: None

Duration: 4 hours

Learning Objectives/Competencies for the module
After this class, a building operator should be able to:

  • Describe basic HVAC system components and how they correlate and interact with each other.
  • Differentiate between different boiler types, describe boiler operations, and be familiar with the various components of boiler maintenance and hot water distribution methods
  • Recall basic furnace components and their maintenance.
  • Recognize common failure modes of HVAC equipment.
  • Understand and be able to explain the refrigeration cycle.
  • Describe various heating and cooling systems and their maintenance and be able to explain why safety measures are necessary and what those entail.
  • Explain the role, components, and importance of ventilation and air distribution systems.
  • Discuss the components and benefits of effective preventative operations and maintenance programs and be able to describe O&M best practices.
