(Job #14-116) Building Service Engineer, $4,863-$6,279/month (Appointments are normally made at the begin-ning of the salary range.) This is a full-time, benefited, 12-month, probationary position in Facilities Management.
Position Summary: Under general supervision of the Chief Engineer/Energy Manager, the incumbent performs a full range of independent skilled trades work and related tasks as required to maintain and/or modify building heat-ing, ventilation, plumbing, electrical, mechanical, refrigeration, air conditioning and water systems. Incumbents in this classification also may provide instruction and lead direction to unskilled and semi-skilled assistants. This posi-tion typically works a 40 hour per week rotating shift that includes occasional nights, weekends, and holidays.
Duties:
 Provide Skilled, Journey Level HVAC and mechanical work (journey-level in one trade).
 Operate campus building mechanical, HVAC systems, and swimming pool.
 Perform basic tasks in the plumbing, carpentry, electrical and custodial trades as required to ensure University facilities remain operational.
Minimum Qualifications: Experience: Two years of journey-level experience in the operation, maintenance and repair of boiler, heating, ventilating, refrigeration and air conditioning equipment and systems or the equivalent combination of formal course work in mechanical technology and hands-on experience.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
 Demonstrate a high degree of mechanical skill equivalent to journey-level in one or more related trades such as plumbing, pipe fitting, electrical, or air conditioning.
 Thorough knowledge of hydronic boilers, compressed air, ventilation, air conditioning, refrigeration and other mechanical equipment; knowledge of the methods, tools and materials used in the operation, maintenance and repair of such equipment.
 Working knowledge of building control systems including pneumatic, electro-mechanical, and DDC controls.
 General knowledge of the applicable state and federal safety codes and regulations pertaining to mechanical and HVAC systems
 Ability to inspect, maintain, repair and/or modify building heating, ventilation, plumbing, electrical, mechani-cal, refrigeration, air conditioning and water systems.
 Provide instruction to unskilled and semi-skilled assistants
 Ability to read and write at a level appropriate to the position; and perform arithmetic calculations as required by the position.
 Ability to perform strenuous work in potentially hazardous environments.
 Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
 Ability to operationalize sustainability concepts (economy, society, environment) into all aspects of performing job duties.
 Demonstrated ability to work with staff, students, and faculty from diverse backgrounds.
 Ability to communicate effectively and work harmoniously with a wide variety of individuals.
Preferred Qualifications:
 Three years of journey-level working experience in the operation, maintenance and repair of HVAC equipment and systems, or the equivalent combination of formal coursework in mechanical technology and hands-on ex-perience.
 Completion of an approved apprenticeship program, or equivalent military training, in a mechanical or HVAC related trade.
 Thorough knowledge of pneumatic and DDC control systems and networking.
 Experience with air and hydronic system balancing.
 Experience with word processing, spreadsheet, and energy management software programs .
