Mr. Welshans has joined the BOC team as an Instructional Specialist for our partner, National Sustainable Structures Center (NSSC) at Pennsylvania College of Technology (Williamsport, PA).

Gerald “Jerry” Welshans is an Instructional Specialist at NSSC at Penn College. His background is in both institutional and industrial maintenance, specifically the HVAC, steam, electrical, environmental quality, controls, and plumbing trades in installation, maintenance and management capacities. Jerry is a technical expert and Pennsylvania-Certified Instructor for Building Science and Energy Conservation courses that apply to both the commercial and residential building sectors. Jerry instructs nearly 30 courses, including Building Operator Certification (BOC) Level I and Level II, Commercial Building Re-tuning, OSHA Construction Industry, EPA Certified Lead Renovator, Building Performance Institute (BPI) for several certifications, and a variety of courses toward state and national certifications for Weatherization Installer Technician, Crew Leader, Energy Auditor, and Quality Control Inspector. He is a BPI “Super Proctor”, a certified Level 1 Thermographer, and a trainer in solar technologies.

Prior to working at Penn College, Jerry worked for over 30 years at several school districts and a local Career & Technology Center as a General Science and Vocational Teacher, building maintenance staff member, and supervisor responsible for air distribution, HVAC, lighting and heating systems in institutional buildings. He also worked as a Maintenance Technician for West Pharmaceuticals, where he became a qualified employee to monitor and adjust environmental controls and air distribution for Class 100 Clean Rooms; maintain, test, and operate high/low pressure gas steam boilers and their related distribution systems. Jerry holds an EPA Universal Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Technician Certification. Jerry’s skills set includes carpentry, masonry, plumbing, electrical, grounds work, painting, general building maintenance, and teaching these trades to young adults. His prior education includes coursework and Competency Assessments on Building Construction Occupations and Building Trades Maintenance from the Pennsylvania State University.
